Abstract

The human rights declaration is the most important step in the cultural evolution of man. It is a great achievement for mankind and so protecting these acceptance of human rights is the responsibility of the entire human race. Merely giving a person rights will have no meaning if the person himself is not aware about that. So our study has been an attempt to know whether teacher-student are given proper rights to develop their teaching skills in Pre-service teacher education. The data were collected using the opinionnaire constructed by the researcher. It has thirty five statements to check their human rights. Two hundred teacher -students from four pre-service teacher education institutes were selected as a sample by random sampling technique. The statistical techniques of percentage and chi-square were used for the analysis and interpretation of the data. And it reveals that teachers-students enjoy their human rights in most of the cases. But they also disclosed the things where they felt their human rights are violated.

Analysis of the above data shows that most of the student-teachers had taken up this course without any pressure. The fact the data reveals that most of the  student-teachers enjoyed their human rights. Student-teachers were allowed to to take part in the activities of their choice. Most of the student-teachers also feel that in their college they were entitled to enjoy the public holidays. They also felt that they were free to discuss any teaching point in the classroom. Most of them agreed on the statement that they could enjoy their right to earn after college hours. They agreed that all the student-teachers were given equal guidance regarding lesson-planning, the student-council was formed in a democratic way, they were allowed to use teaching aid of college during lessons.
The data also reveals the darker side of the situation . It is unfortunate that many of the student-teachers were not happy for the matter that they were criticised in public for that work. They accepted the fact that they were treated according to their achievements. They could also not discuss about the grades they obtained for the practical lessons. The data also shows the fact that all student-teachers were not allowed to present the prayer of any religion. They were  not allowed to use ‘suggestion box’ for their suggestions and complaint. They were not free to wear any civilised dress in the college. The chi-square of the all statements were significant at the level of 0.01.

Findings

  • They were allowed to take part in the activities of their choice.
  • They were free to discuss any teaching point in the classroom.
  • They were entitled to enjoy the public holidays.
  • They took part in activities held at the institutes without any compulsion and pressure.
  • The student-teachers were allowed to earn after college hours.
  • They could take the information from any lecturer.
  • All the student-teachers were given equal guidance regarding lesson-planning.
  • The student-council was formed in a democratic way.
  • They were allowed to use teaching aid of college during lessons.
  • They were not allowed to use ‘suggestion box’ for their suggestions and complaint.
  • They were not free to wear any civilised dress in the college.
  • They could not present a prayer from any religion.
  • They were not treated according to their achievements.
  • They could not discuss with the lecturers about the grades given to them for the practice lesson.
  • They were criticised in public for that work.
Conclusion
  • Teacher education colleges have created the healthy atmosphere where student-teachers can enjoy their human rights to develop their teaching skills and their all round development. But there are some situations in which student-teachers are not satisfied. The researcher feels that teacher- education college is the place where the teacher is taking shape so the teacher educators should be very much aware as far as human rights of student-teachers are concerned.
